Hope you are not disappointed as this post is not about goal setting and new year’s resolutions!
Instead, it is about a very simple but effective idea that I got from My friend Dave Coffman. While at a shoot recently, I noticed he had on what appeared to be a silicone ring on his left ring finger. What a brilliant idea! A silicone ring was just the thing to prevent scratching up the woodwork on his beautiful Perazzi!
I had been thinking about getting a new ring myself. Having successfully reduced my body fat % this year, I had found that my wedding band no longer fit. In fact, while playing a spirited game of “Dog-in-the-middle” with our German Shepherd, it had gone sailing off of my finger and nearly hit my wife who was stationed clear across the kitchen from me!
So, I did what I usually do… went on Amazon and scored a 4 pack of silicone rings in different colors for the price of $12.99!
No longer did I need to worry about potentially losing my ring while shooting or exercising. Further, I didn’t have to be concerned about scratching up my shotgun! One might ask why not just remove the ring while shooting or working out. That would certainly work, but after nearly 40 years of marriage. I am used to the feel of wearing a wedding band and feel uncomfortable without it on.
Something as simple as having a ring on without the fear of losing it or causing damage can actually factor in positively to one’s mental game. Reducing any form of anxiety allows one to stay focused on their primary activity.
just a note about fit of the rings I got on amazon. The reviews mentioned that going down a size was a good idea. I failed to heed that advice, and the first pack of rings I received were too large… but the seller made the process easy. They ask you to contact them directly, and at no charge and with no need to return the first pack of rings, they shipped me a second pack one size smaller.
